Design & Develop

Explore many different answers to your clearly defined "How Might We" statement seeking inspiration from a wide range of places. Test your best ideas by prototyping, and settle on a final concept design to further develop in the Deliver phase.

Collating Ideas.

According to my "How Might We" Statement, I searched various case studies. And then, I documented 30 ideas on the miro board.

Eventually, I chose three ideas out of 30 concepts, which are an app that helps organize students' notes in class, a learning hotline, and an electronic pen.

Testing.

After the brainstorming session, I used simple approaches to quickly and efficiently test my chosen ideas, such as paper prototyping and storyboard. These three concepts are all about tackling problems in different ways. These strategies appeal to me because they provide students with varying amounts of support in terms of learning attitude and note-taking abilities.

A. Organise Notes App.

The first idea is an app to help students organize notes in class. This app contains the Connell Note Taking template, which is scientifically proven to be more efficient and makes reviewing notes much easier. The notes page is separated into four different sections. When students are taking notes in class, they can use the 'lock' icon to lock the left-hand column and write your main notes only on the right-hand 'main notes' area, which helps students to concentrate. The app also has a 'revision mode' where you can answer questions about your notes on the left-hand side during revision, as well as keywords or comments to make the whole revision and exam preparation process easier. In addition, the revision mode includes a "timer" to prevent students from wasting the time during revision and the "recorder" to record essential points in the lesson for review at any time.

There are still multiple immature aspects of this app. Many students are the first time using the organize notes app and they may need instruction to teach them how to use it. In addition, The function of displaying word count and selecting good looking brushes is also what drives students to use the app. Despite these design flaws, I love the app idea as the app has a significant boost to students' note-taking efficiency.

B. Learning Hotline.

The second test is the explosion of the learning hotline, as calling for advice when a student has some issues is an effective way to help. The hotline is available for advice on organising notes, language help, and self-reflection skills; the team managed by the University of Auckland will give students access to professional help.

During the test, I found that this telephone hotline is valuable for students willing to study and consult independently. However, the test is flawed for students who are introverted to ask questions and reluctant to communicate about their troubles. To address this situation, we need to consider another solution to improve the test.

C. Take Notes Electronic Pen.

Finally, I use the storyboard to test the take notes electronic pen. It is an emerging technology, there are two buttons on the top of the pen, the first of which has an audio recording function. Pressing it allows students to record important content during the lesson, a function used when students are concentrating on the class and wish to collate their notes afterwards. The role of the second button is to change the writing mode to automatic mode. Students sweep the pen across the page in the automatic mode, and the content from the recording will automatically appear on the paper, eliminating the need to write it themselves.

Although the automatic mode is convenient, some students have complained that the drawback of this pen's automatic mode is that the automatic mode does not allow them to deepen their impressions of knowledge by writing notes by hand, which is indeed a thought-provoking idea. I believe it is an attractive test, but there are considerable practical functions in this pen that needs to be explored.

Conclusion.

By quickly prototyping three concepts,  I discover that each concept has its unique value. According to my "How Might We" Statement, I feel that the best solution is the organizing notes app. Although it has some flaws, the app helps students take notes effectively because it includes many auxiliary functions, such as Connell note-taking template, recording and timer.
