Blog 6

Welcome to Week 6!

As the mid-semester break approaches, I find myself filled with both nervousness and excitement.

I have to say that after checking my programme with Mairi on Thursday, I felt a sense of relief because she validated my plan and her approval convinced me that I was on the right track.

Facts

This week, I'm in the fourth week of the define phase of double-diamond, and I've looked up the mood card precedent and worked out the project's name and the Flow of the app.

Mood Card

Guest's project, which focused on biculturalism and inclusive design, has deeply inspired me. In my project, I prioritise cultural integration because my target audience comprises all New Zealand university students. However, as an international student, I know cultural differences are important. By understanding and respecting the values and customs of diverse cultural backgrounds, I aim to create an inclusive design that makes all students feel respected and understood.

Drawing from my experience as an international student, I will consider how better to balance the needs of different cultures in my design. And ensure that every user finds resonance in a multicultural environment and has a positive experience. I will use different languages to express my respect for cultural diversity in my design. This approach will not only help users from various backgrounds to use products but also help them feel valued and understood.

APP Flow

This week's most important task was to create the APP Flow to integrate AR with the app. I started by looking up precedents for APPs in the mental health and forgetfulness fields, analysing their features, strengths, and weaknesses, and finding inspiration to form my APP.

Here's my explanation of the app's functionality:

Home: The Home page allows the user to see a history of mood cards, all recorded on a memory Journey timeline. Every mood the user scans with AR is recorded in Memory Journey, and when the user clicks on a particular day, the APP will show the mood card they recorded on that day.

Memo/Alarm Clock: The user can record everything that needs to be reminded in the memo, and the alarm clock will remind the user in time.

AR Function: In the middle is the AR function. After the mobile phone camera scans the user's emotional state, the APP will know whether the user is happy or anxious and suggest a suitable physical emotional card (physical emotional cards can be bought through the APP).

Forum:

-Psychologist's section: Psychologists will provide knowledge and advice through forum postings.

-Provides a space where users can share experiences, offer support, and discuss challenges related to memory and stress.

-Peer Interaction: Allows users to connect with others facing similar challenges.

Mood data recording: Memory and Stress Analysis: Based on the mood data recorded by the user for this period (memory journey), the APP will provide analyses and suggestions on memory performance and stress levels, helping the user to understand their emotional state in a timely manner and take suitable actions.

When I was explaining the app process to Mairi, she made a significant point:

"Suppose the technology allows the user to dialogue directly with the AI. In that case, it may cause problems regarding topics that involve deep emotions, such as sharing childhood experiences or family background. As a "mechanical counsellor," AI lacks the empathy to provide in-depth advice and may even give extreme or inappropriate advice."

Although my project doesn't involve AI conversation features, Mairi's feedback has made me more aware of the ethical and emotional factors that need to be considered in design.

Additionally, I found myself facing challenges in terms of time management. I have significant project tasks and need enough time to complete all the planned work. In the last week of the holiday, I struggled to find the motivation to work, which stalled my progress. However, I must complete some work during the break to avoid piling everything up at the end. To overcome this challenge, I plan to go to a place with an intense learning atmosphere, such as a coffee shop or the school library.

Feeling

This week, I felt the burden of the project and the time constraints, which put some pressure on me; it also prompted me to rethink how to utilise my limited resources to complete my tasks more efficiently. In addition, Mairi's feedback made me realise the need to pay more attention to ethical and emotional factors in design, which inspired me to take responsibility for the project. I will further consider how to better consider user experience in design.

On the other hand, I also felt some self-doubt when faced with too many tasks and limited time.  In this case, I inevitably think of some powerlessness, decreasing my concentration level.

Findings

In my reflections this week, the project has not progressed as smoothly as I had imagined, mainly due to time management challenges and the complexity of the tasks. I have to admit that this did influence my behaviour and decisions. I felt uneasy for a while in the face of these pressures. However, I don’t see this as a failure. I continued to move forward with my plan and build APP Flow. Although the project is incomplete, my adjustments and efforts this week allowed me to achieve some of my expected outcomes, demonstrating my resilience and self-adjusting ability.

On the other hand, my poor time management caused me to miss out on more profound research into relevant precedents. This makes me regretful, but I will plan and allocate my time more accurately during the holidays to ensure the project has technical and theoretical backing.

Overall, this week's experience has made me realise that although some frustration is inevitable when faced with challenges and difficulties, it is still possible to find a way forward and progress in adversity by adjusting plans and strategies.

Future

Reflecting on Mairi's feedback, I will focus more on the safety and mental health of the user experience and ensure that I take a cautious and responsible approach to any design decisions that may affect the user's emotions. Moving forward, I will adopt a more careful and accountable approach to design decisions that could impact users' emotions. Ensuring that technology can always maintain the user's mental and emotional needs when assisting them.

In the future, I will pay more attention to project time management and use Guest's recommended software resources to optimise the design process and enhance work efficiency. At the same time, I will also maintain communication with Mairi to deal with any unexpected situations and ensure that the project is on the right track. In addition, I want to keep a flexible mindset and be able to think quietly and find solutions when faced with uncertainties and challenges.
