The Pluriverse/Indigenous Futurism.

Pluriverse means the coexistence of many universes, where people can tolerate differences between people and many different points of view. Different racial, ethnic, religious or social groups are in a common society, where they autonomously participate and develop their own traditional culture. In a pluralistic society, different communities show respect for each other so that they can coexist comfortably and without conflict. In pluriversal design, the collective is able to design and discuss together more effectively. Pluralism is one of the essential features of modern society and a key driving force in scientific, social and economic development.

Rather than aiming for commerce and modernisation, the pluralistic design uses a more collaborative-based approach to building participatory and open concepts. This type of design grounds human activity in a natural position; it looks at environmental, gender, class, ethnicity and other political issues to create a more equitable and sustainable society through critical thinking (Duke University Press, n.d.).

In societies where power is highly centralised, decisions are made by a small number of people. However, pluralistic societies have a comparatively greater decentralisation of power, decision-making, and benefit distribution. This promotes greater community participation and has better effects on social development.

Understanding different cultural backgrounds through pluralistic design help speculative design to create a more inclusive and free space to promote a pluralistic dialogue about design. The goal is to find ways to develop a world that is acceptable and safe for people by bringing together various viewpoints and discussing political issues like racism, sexism, and sexual orientation issues. The design process based on the principles of authenticity and respect to create a more informed vision of the future.

Indigenous Futurism is about daring Indigenous, Indigenous writers and other creators to reject colonial ideas and encourage them to dare to imagine and create their own world and theirs from an alternative perspective, one that is free of colonialism, sexism and even racism. This is not only an imagining of a better future but also a rebuttal to colonialism. There is no denying that Black Panther is an excellent example of showing African futurism. The movie embodies the UN's Sustainable Development Goals – it depicts an Africa with gender equality, no hunger or poverty, health, and clean energy.

In this context, Wakanda is an African superpower that can challenge the racist fantasies of the West. Women can be respected as warriors and leaders, American war criminals can be tried internationally in Wakanda's courts, Wakanda's aircraft can protect its people from foreign drones, and the science and technology in Africa are at the top of the world (Canavan, 2018).

The film imagines and rewrites the Africa of the past, present and future. The design aims to bring awareness to the power of indigenous cultural beliefs for people and give them hope for the future.

Dunne and Raby describe speculative design as: "an activity where conjecture is as good as knowledge, where futuristic and alternative scenarios convey ideas, and where the goal is to emphasize implications of 'mindless' decisions for mankind (Wikipedia, n.d., para. 2)." The critical and speculative design that they propose allow people to re-examine the world in a different angle, venture into the future and communicate different ideas. The Black Panther films break the hold of Western discourse and counter the inherent image of Africa as primitive and backward; Africa is no longer a vulnerable community, and the black people highlight their position–strong opposition to the hegemony of imperial discourse. In addition, the independent and self-empowered female characters are portrayed, and these different ideas are an extension of the critical and speculative design.
