Welcome to Week 5!

This week, my reflection will follow The four F's of active reviewing.

As time passes and tasks continue to accumulate, I have noticeably felt a growing sense of anxiety. Although the motivation is not enough, I will always insist.

Facts

This week, I am in the third week of the Define phase. I have gained some valuable insights after completing the persona and value proposition canvas analysis for the target audience and project leader over the past two weeks. This week, I conducted a SWOT analysis for the project, researched and analysed precedents of facial expression recognition systems and their application in apps. Additionally, I created a mood board for the app and developed a colour palette to set the tone for the project.

Regarding the Facial Emotion Recognition (FER) technology, I have analysed why it is helpful for my project, how it functions, and how I can effectively integrate facial recognition systems into my design. This can enrich my project because emotion-driven interactions increase user engagement and allow users to feel a higher level of emotional resonance, thus enhancing the overall user experience.

Additionally, I developed an emotion-themed version of the app and created a colour palette that aligns with the project’s theme. My inspiration came from the movie Inside Out, which perfectly captures the complexity of emotions and how they interact within the human body. By drawing on this inspiration, I aim to create a colour palette that visually resonates with users, where different colours reflect different emotional states. This approach ensures the aesthetic appeal of the app’s interface and is closely related to the user experience. It helps create a more immersive and relatable user journey aligned with the project's goals.

SWOT Analysis of the project

Through the persona and the value proposition canvas analyses of the audience group and the project leader in the last two weeks, I stood to see the project's significance from two perspectives. Further, I deepened my understanding of the project through the SWOT analysis of the project. Through the study, I realised that the unique value of the project lies in the innovative application of AR technology and the multi-sensory experience; the user-centred design approach provides users with significant emotional support and stress management tools. In addition, the collaboration with professionals from different fields enhanced the competitiveness of this project. However, the complexity of the technical realisation, cost and time constraints, and the security aspects of user privacy could also be significant challenges. Therefore, I need to pay close attention to these issues as the project progresses and develop suitable strategies to deal with them.

Feeling

I experienced an abundance of feelings through the creation of the mood boards and colour palettes. I felt a strong creative passion during the design process, especially when incorporating the Inside Out inspiration into the colour palette. Whenever I saw the design's consistency with the project's theme come through, I felt delighted and motivated. This has given me a deeper understanding and creative passion for the visual representation of the project. The design tools of the colour palette not only ensured the overall tone of the design but also helped me maintain consistency and immersion in subsequent designs. I think this also has to do with the fact that I fully empathised with the audience group through different design tools in the early stages and brought myself more deeply into the user's perspective.

However, I also felt anxious when faced with technical implementation challenges and the project's complexity. I constantly considered whether I could perfectly translate the design concepts into actual functionality, and I was frustrated by the technical limitations and lack of resources. I also felt an enduring sense of determination and motivation in this situation. Despite the difficulties, I remained confident in my love for the project and hoped that I could achieve the final goal through continuous efforts and improvements.

Founding

Throughout this week's journey, I have found that my feelings profoundly influence what I say and do. Although I have yet to work on the exact concept design, the passion and satisfaction of conceptualising the design palette and initial concepts have pushed me to be more focused and committed, making me more attentive to the details. This positive emotion also gave me confidence in the project. However, when faced with technical software challenges, I constantly think about whether I could design the concepts in software. A significant workload and feelings of anxiety have impacted my efficiency and decision-making process this week. I feel like I've been stuck on the technical aspects, and perhaps I could find more convenient tools to bring my ideas to life without worrying too much at this stage.

Regarding feedback, the responses from both classmates and mentors generally indicated that the colour palette and user interface design are well-aligned with the project theme and can effectively enhance the emotional experience for users. This has also made me realise that gathering user feedback is crucial in the design process, as it helps me identify any potential issues in the design and ensures that the final product better meets user needs.

Future

I will apply the experience of experiencing the user's emotions first-hand in this project to my future designs, and this approach will help me create more immersive and empathetic user experiences in my future design projects. In the future, I will keep the user's needs in mind. Through this design process, I have gained a deeper understanding of the challenges of technical implementation, which has motivated me to place more emphasis on technical feasibility in future projects. Also, I don't need to worry too much about things that haven't happened yet; there may be a better solution soon.

Overall, it has been a busy and fulfilling week, and I am pleased with the progress I have made this week, especially in terms of the design palette and the use of the Mood Board to ensure the visual consistency of the project and fit closely with the emotional theme of Inside Out. The challenging process has led to many valuable lessons and growth. In addition, this reflective framework was very efficient as it helped me organise and summarise my thoughts for the week. I look forward to what is to come and hope to continue this positive progression and creative thinking in the upcoming phases.
